Since I’ve spent the better part of my life (a realization I’m making as I write this) studying literary theory, I think it is within my right to say that most literary theory is a wash. As you toil away in your English classes, listening to the professionals pontificate ad nauseam about what an author means by doing this or that, remember one thing: most of these authors are dead and their motives were never questioned. But, thanks to this article about symbolism, Jack Kerouac, and his literary constituents,  the answer to whether or not certain writers mean more than they say is a resounding “No.”
